Indira, Rajiv names axed from two Hindi awards

Mallika Sherawat: I'd love to play Indira Gandhi

NEW DELHI: The government has decided to discontinue two awards named after
former PMs Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, conferred until last year on
those doing outstanding work for promoting the progressive use of Hindi
language. Instead, it has introduced two new awards scheme, offering the
Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar and Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar for propagating the
national language.

A home ministry order dated March 25, 2015 said the department of official
language was launching the 'Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar' awards scheme from
2015-16 to encourage the implementation of the official language policy, in
supersession to the earlier 'Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Puruskar'. Another
simultaneous order said a new award scheme named 'Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar
Yojana' was being introduced from 2015-16 with an object to encourage
writing of books in Hindi in various streams of modern knowledge/science
and to promote the language, in supersession to the 'Rajiv Gandhi Rashtriya
Gyan-Vigyan Maulik Pustak Lekhan Puraskar'.

Miffed at the revised nomenclature, Congress has accused the government of
dropping the names of two PMs due to "political considerations". The Centre
says it was a purely administrative decision to repackage the awards scheme.

Earlier, there were four categories of Rajbhasha awards, of which two were
named after the two former PMs. The four awards have been merged into two
schemes now.
