The 81st All-India Kannada Sahitya Sammelan got off to a spirited start at
the historical and pilgrimage town of Shravanabelgola with poet and
sammelan president Siddalingaiah stressing the need for a massive public
movement for sustenance of Kannada. Making a fervent plea to people to join
such a movement, he asked them to be ready for any sacrifice.

In the presidential speech at the inaugural ceremony, he said Karnataka
should appeal to the Centre to bring about suitable amendments and a
national language policy to facilitate that primary school education was in
the languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. The
Chief Minister should make efforts to bring about consensus among other
States on this and till then, State should have its own language policy on
the lines of the Right to Education Act, he noted.

Dr. Siddalingaiah said all government schools should be upgraded as gram
panchayat public schools and basic necessities should be provided. English
should be taught as a language from the first standard effectively, he
added.
