 English Language School Board

The P.E.I. English Language School Board adopted a new set of rules Tuesday
night regarding when a parent can make an appeal directly to its trustees.

The new policy is the culmination of several months of work and replaces a
similar policy that Superintendent Cynthia Fleet said needed to be
“sharpened.”

“Under legislation parents have the right to appeal a decision of an
employee of the board – if it’s a decision they feel has significantly
impacted the education of their child,” said Fleet.

The exact wording of the new policy hasn’t been released yet, though it
will go on the board’s website later this week, but its basic structure was
discussed during Tuesday’s monthly board meeting.

The intention, said Fleet, is to work out whatever dispute there is at the
local school level.

However, if that is not possible the dispute would then be taken to the
most relevant director at the school board.

If the parents are still not satisfied, they may apply to deal directly
with a specialized committee of the board consisting of three trustees, the
board chair and the superintendent, or designate, who would sit as a
non-voting ex-officio.

There is no higher appeals process for parents with children in the
Island’s English language school system.
