CAPE TOWN - Stellenbosch University
<http://ewn.co.za/Topic/Open-Stellenbosch> has approved a motion to amend
its language policy leading up to further proposed changes this year.

The university’s council met on Monday to discuss various aspects relating
to transformation at the institution.

Maties spokesperson Martin Viljoen said, “Council supported the
recommendation by the rector’s management team that we would safeguard
Afrikaans as an academic language and it should be removed from the
introduction of the language policy.”

Viljoen added the introduction of IsiXhosa was still in the pipeline.

He adds the rector’s management team has accepted the recommendations.

While a council meeting was underway yesterday, student movement Open
Stellenbosch

hosted a demonstration at the university’s Tygerberg campus.

The movement is calling for the dissolution of council

a campaign for greater transformation

at the institution.

Last week, Open Stellenbosch also said it is not happy

with newly revised language policy.

The new policy aims to place English and Afrikaans on an equal level as the
language of instruction in classrooms.
