The Russian Center at the National Chengchi University has hosted another
thesis defense in Russian. The event was attended by Taiwanese and Russian
researchers from the National Chengchi University, the National Taiwan
University and the Chinese Culture University, as well as a number of
migrants, the candidate included.

The thesis was devoted to state language policy in the Tyva Republic in
late 20th century and early 21st century. The author spoke about the
people-oriented trends in the region’s language policy and elaborated on
the importance of Tyva’s experience in language management for future
linguistic harmonization in Taiwan.

Like Taiwan, the Tyva Republic is a multi-ethnic region, and by studying
its language policy Taiwan could optimize its language planning and make
Taiwanese dialects and indigenous languages more viable. The author noted
that Russia’s state language policy was more efficient that the measures
taken by many other multi-ethnic countries, such as India, the US, Brazil,
Indonesia, China and Mexico. UNESCO experts believe Russia’s methods should
be used as a basis for people-oriented language policies in the modern
world.

The thesis was recommended for publication. It will be available on the
website of the university library. The Russian Center will be glad to host
similar events in the future.
