JOHANNESBURG – Trade union Solidarity, AfriForum
<http://ewn.co.za/Topic/AfriForum> and AfriForum Youth say they will
approach the Bloemfontein High Court for an interdict against the University
of the Free State <http://ewn.co.za/Topic/University-of-the-Free-State> to
stop a proposed change to its current language policy.

On Friday, the university’s council reached a unanimous decision to make
English the primary medium of instruction starting next year.

Solidarity however claims the new policy is already taking form and serves
to disadvantage students who want to continue their studies in Afrikaans.

“At this stage already students that have enrolled in Afrikaans are being
forced to take their classes in English and that, in itself, is already
discriminatory in nature because there is a contract in place between that
student and the university that they will be able to do those classes in
Afrikaans.”
