CALL FOR CONFERENCE PAPERS ON LANGUAGE POLITICS AND POLICY IN THE HIMALAYAS

EXTENDED DEADLINE

Conference: The Himalayan Studies Conference V

Dates: September 1-4, 2017

Location: University of Colorado Boulder

Boulder, Colorado, USA

Conference Website: http://www.colorado.edu/hsc2017/

The study of language politics and policy has been primarily conducted
within the context of the nation-state, drawing on the Western European
model of linguistic nationalism. Language politics and policies in colonial
and post-colonial states necessitates an interrogation of the universality
of the Western European model and recognition of the ubiquity of societal
and individual multilingualism. Global English, the language of
globalization particularly in its neo-liberal form, adds a further
complication to the conventional study of language politics and policy. The
Himalayan Studies Conference V provides a geographical, historical and
cultural thematic for invigorating the study of language politics and
policy. Papers that address language issues in their historical, local,
national, regional and international contexts throughout the Himalayas are
solicited.
