Battle over new language policy at UFS to continue tomorrow

According to the new policy, Afrikaans will be phased out as a medium of
instruction in 2017.
Security was tight at the University of the Free State main campus in
Blomfontein on 23 February 2016 as employees and students demonstrated over
the insourcing of staff, wages and what they call a lack of inclusive
tertiary education.

JOHANNESBURG - Lobby group AfriForum and Trade Union Solidarity will
tomorrow approach the High Court in Bloemfontein in an effort to halt the
application of a new language policy at the University of the Free State
(UFS).

According to the new policy, Afrikaans will be phased out as a medium of
instruction in 2017.

Earlier this year, a high court ruling found the new policy to be
unconstitutional and called for its implementation to be set aside.

But the university has since applied to the Supreme Court of Appeal and the
Constitutional Court for leave to appeal the verdict.

While it waits for a decision from the courts, it has decided to go ahead
with the phasing out of Afrikaans.

AfriForum’s Alana Bailey says implementation shouldn’t be allowed to
commence.

“Unfortunately while the university is still waiting for an answer on
whether they will be allowed to appeal or not, they are busy implementing
this policy and we feel this shouldn’t be pushed as quickly as possible, so
as to give reassurance to students that they will still be able to study in
Afrikaans next year.”
