*Staff Reporter,*

Maharathi Bhasha Samiti of Secretariat of Maharashtra State Legislature has
recommended the Government that the name of any Government project or
scheme should not be in English but in Marathi. As a first step towards
give status of classical language to Marathi language, Government should
take care of using Marathi names to its projects and schemes at grass root
levels, a Samiti recommended.

A delegation of members of Marathi Bhasha Samiti led by MLA Prof Medha
Kulkarni met Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, on Wednesday,
in assembly premises and handed over the first report and recommendations
to the Chief Minister.

Government of Maharashtra has accepted Marathi language as an official
working language in all Government offices. With an objective to take a
brief review of use of Marathi language in Government ruled and semi
Government offices and suggest some recommendations to Government for
improving the usage of Marathi language in its working, a Marathi Bhasha
Samiti having members of both houses was constituted recently. The
committee had organised three meetings of its members on October 4, 11 and
25 in Mumbai and the members had discussed plans for usage of Marathi
language as Government’s official language. A report based on the
discussions of members during the meetings was prepared and the members
handed over its
suggestions and recommendations to Chief Minister for popularising Marathi
language and to increase its use at different levels.

The committee has also presented its report and proposal for giving a
status of classical language to Marathi to Central Government and Sahitya
Akademi has also accepted the same. The committee has appealed to Marathi
speaking Members of Parliament (MP) and Union Ministers should pursue the
matter during the eve of Lok Sabha session to get the proposal sanctioned
in Lok Sabha.

Maharashtra Government has sanctioned the offices of Regional Divisional
Marathi Bhasha Departments at Nashik and Amravati, but the actual
functioning of these offices has not bee started yet. The committee
recommended Government to start functioning these offices.

Government should also establish contacts with courts and ask legal
authorities to use Marathi as their official language. Marathi Advisory
Committee has already submitted the draft of Marathi language policy to
Government and Government should immediately think and act on it. The
central Government offices are organising projects like ‘Hindi Fortnight’
in their offices. The committee has recommended to start such projects in
State Government offices to promote Marathi language. The proposal of
linking Directorate and Library Office to Marathi Department and Government
should take immediate decision on its, a committee stated.

Government should also think to give concession to Marathi books on the
line of Marathi films. There is a need to appoint Marathi Vigilance Officer
in each Government department and Government should take initiative to
appoint such officer in each department to monitor whether Marathi language
is used as an official language or not, the committee mentioned.

The delegation consisted of legislators Shirish Chaudhari, Sudhakar Kohale,
Sanjay Kelkar, Adv Parag Alawani, Ramesh Latke, Rajabhau Waje, Harshvardhan
Jadhav, Tryambak Bhise, Dr Jinetdra Awhad, Prof Anil Sole, Adv Anil Parab,
Hemant Takle and Anant Gadgil.
