[lg policy] Sheffield Hallam University Vice-Chancellor's PhD scholarships (UK/EU students only)

It's that time of year where you'll see a lot of messages for PhD scholarships at
different UK universities. In many cases that's a little cheeky because they're
actually part of the national 'Doctoral Training Partnerships' scheme, not specific
to individual universities. But Sheffield Hallam University really does have a
different fund for PhDs so it seems fair to mention it as such :)

The Vice-Chancellor's PhD scholarships are university-wide, awarded on the basis of
written application plus in-person interview. They're extremely competitive, but then
of course all PhD schemes are - and there's no rule against applying here whilst also
applying elsewhere. Applicants will usually have a Masters degree, and in many cases
a record of other relevant experience.

The online advertisements and official deadline aren't yet finalised but you can
register to be notified:
https://www.shu.ac.uk/campaigns/fully-funded-phd-scholarship-opportunities. If the
eligibility requirements are the same as last year it'll be limited to UK or EU
applicants I'm afraid. The deadline will probably be late February.

Anyway, the reason I'm sending this message now instead of when everything is
formally announced is that PhD applications take time, and applicants would do well
to start scoping out potential supervisees now, ready to start the forms when the
time comes. I for one am very much available to supervise PhDs and I'd love to hear
from potential applicants in my areas of interest: broadly speaking language policy
and variationist sociolinguistics (not necessarily combined!). There are lots of
other specialisms represented across the university. For staff in the Humanities
Research Centre (that includes my area, linguistics) take a look here:
https://www.shu.ac.uk/research/specialisms/humanites-research-centre/staff.

Generally speaking I'm not otherwise useful for administrative information about the
scholarships. For that you're best off signing up on the website linked above, and/or
contacting the Admissions team: askhallam at shu.ac.uk.

Best of luck to all applicants!

Dave
