The meeting between the Asam Sahitya Sabha and the eight literary groups in
Guwahati on Friday

*Guwahati:* The stand-off between Asam Sahitya Sabha and the sahitya sabhas
(literary groups) of eight indigenous communities of the state over a
common language policy remained unresolved on Friday.

After an over two-hour meeting here in the evening, the leaders of the
Sabha and the eight literary groups decided to take a final call on the
issue in a meeting with the state government on August 7.

"The meeting decided to take a final call on the language policy on August
7 in a meeting with the state government," said Padum Rajkhowa, the general
secretary of the Sabha.

The literary groups represented Karbi, Bodo, Rabha, Tiwa, Dimasa, Mising,
Deori and Garo communities.

The Sabha has been in a discord with the eight literary groups for years
over a language policy. While the latter support a "partial four-language"
policy, the Sabha is opposed to it.

This was the second round of discussion between the Sabha and the eight
literary groups on the issue. The first meeting was held on July 23 where
they had hoped to come to an agreement in their second meeting.

Sources said once the Sabha and the eight literary groups agree to a common
language policy the state government will go ahead and implement it.

The government has appointed Dhemaji MLA Ranoj Pegu to mediate among them.
Pegu also attended the Friday meeting.

Rajkhowa said the participants of the meeting agreed to work together for
development of official languages and mother tongues of all communities of
the state.

The meeting also discussed the NRC update. They thanked Bodoland Peoples'
Front's Rajya Sabha member Biswajit Daimary for strongly defending the NRC
update process in the House.
