 6th International conference on ‘Endangered languages’ at CIIL from
tomorrow

Mysuru, February 20:-  On the occasion of International Mother Language
Day, the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) is hosting the
6th International
conference on ‘Endangered and lesser known languages’ from February 21 to
23 in the city.

The conference is organised to celebrate International Mother Language Day
this year, where around one hundred research scholars, professors and
community members from different parts of the country and abroad are
gathering to present and discuss their work on the theme ‘Documentation of
endangered and lesser-known languages, language ecology, language
endangerment scenario, language policy and language planning, language
revitalisation, community’s participation in language revitalisation
process, development of script and orthography and other themes.

The conference aims to discuss the issues and importance of linguistic and
cultural diversity, mother tongue education and the present situation of
the endangered and lesser known languages in India.



The endangered and lesser known languages conference series began as a
platform for academicians, researchers and members of speech communities to
deliberate issues relevant to language endangerment and share their latest
findings.

This annual conference aims to arouse interest in lesser known languages
and train young scholars in language documentation. The theme of the ELKL-6
2018 is “Language endangerment and language revitalisation: Policies,
planning and practices.

Dr Julia Sallabank from SOAS, University of London, will be the keynote
speaker. Padmashri Prof Anvita Abbi, former Professor JNU, New Delhi; Prof
B Ramakrishna Reddy, former Professor PS Telegu University and Prof Peter
Austin, SOAS, University of London, will be the plenary speakers.

There will be around 50 papers on various endangered languages of India and
abroad.

Sujoy Sarkar lecturer-cum-junior research officer, CIIL and officer
In-charge, Scheme for Protection and Preservation of Endangered Languages
(SPPEL) is the coordinator of the conference. Prof D G Rao, director, CIIL
is the chief patron of the conference. *-(KK)*
