De Gruyter Mouton invites self-nominations for the Joshua A. Fishman dissertation award, which honors exceptional doctoral research on any topic relating to the sociology of language.



Submit your application for the Joshua A. Fishman dissertation award by January 15, 2024 for a chance to have a revised version of your dissertation published as a monograph in the Contributions to the Sociology of Language book series founded by Fishman himself and now co-edited by Ofelia García and Francis M. Hult. The award also includes a 1000€ cash prize and a 150€ book voucher.



Joshua A. Fishman (1926–2015) was one of the most influential and prominent scholars in the sociology of language. De Gruyter Mouton established the award to honor Fishman’s enduring scholarly contributions and to encourage and promote outstanding new research by early career scholars in the field.



Any dissertation that has been completed and successfully defended between January 15, 2021 and January 15, 2024 is eligible for the award. The dissertation must have been accepted as part of the requirements for a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
