Awareness*

Language Museums play an important role in curating and promoting language
awareness around multilingualism and multiliteracies, indigenous languages,
and the rich sociocultural and racial diversity of linguistic landscapes.
They tell stories of languages lost or historically ignored because of the
marginalized status of their speakers. They can also illuminate the central
function of language in all facets of public life. Though they operate
outside or alongside traditional sites of language education, language
museums can inspire teachers, inform policymakers, and help mobilize public
support for programs that enhance language competencies in schools and the
broader society. The invited speakers for this CAL webinar will speak to
such possibilities, drawing on their insights and experiences from
establishing and directing language museums, respectively Planet Word in
Washington, DC, and the Canadian Language Museum in Toronto, Canada.
