<P>KUWAIT: Minister of Education and Higher Education, Dr Adel Al Tabtabaei, has issued an order making Arabic language and Islamic religion compulsory subjects for those seeking to obtain an English High School diploma, GCSE, or IGCSE. Under the decree, the Kuwait Ministry of Education will calculate the results of exams in the two subjects. In addition, one of the two should form part of the six subjects taken at O' Level and the average for both subjects must not be below D. As from this year, the aim is to equalise a high school diploma obtained in Kuwait with one taken in a British high school or college, but only after the exams in Arabic language and Islam have been passed. This decree cancels and replaces all previous edicts.</P>
<P>Police arrest drug users</P>
<P>KUWAIT: Capital police were called after a rowdy noise in a flat disturbed the inhabitants of the building. Police rushed to the scene and arrested a number of male and female expatriates under the influence of drugs. Police filed a case and referred them all to the authorities. Meanwhile,a campaign by Hawally police in Jabriya led to the arrest of 70 expatriates in connection with residency violations as well as six wanted men for miscellaneous outstanding offences. <P>New MoE project </P>
<P>KUWAIT: The assistant undersecretary of the Ministry of Education for educational facilities and construction Saleh Al-Yaseen said that construction of the new ministry building in South Surra would be concluded within four years, reported Al-Watan. Speaking to Al-Watan, Al-Yaseen noted that the estimated total cost of the project would be KD 40 million and that the blueprints would be ready in 15 months. "The building will comprise six floors with underground parking lots." </P>
<P>Women to prevail in coming polls</P>
<P>KUWAIT: As part of her electoral campaign for the 2007 parliament, media icon Ayesha Al-Reshaid recently paid a visit to the diwaniya of Ahmed Al-Oqab in Keifan where she addressed an audience of men, reported Al-Watan. Sources said that among the visitors to the diwaniya were lawmen, current and former senior officials and many other dignitaries. Al-Reshaid stressed that she approved of the move to reduce the number of electoral constituencies to five. Al-Reshid also criticised the 'vote-buying' phenomena and called on all voters to be honest in using their political rights. Furthermore, Al-Reshaid highlighted that Kuwaiti women had earned their political rights and that female candidates would be triumphant in the 2007 parliamentary elections by winning votes from men and not only their fellow women. </P>
<P>Saad Academy course </P>
<P>KUWAIT: Under the patronage of the General Director of Sheikh Saad Security Science Academy, Brig Yousuf Al-Saudi, with his assistant, Brig. Ibraheem Rasheed, in attendance, a celebration was held on 26 April to mark the conclusion of the explosives course held between 12 November 2005 and 26 April 2006. Thirty-two trainees participated in the course. </P>
<P>Al-Hajeri hails Swedes</P>
<P>KUWAIT: The Kuwaiti-Swedish Friendship Committee at the National Assembly hailed the Swedish Kingdom and its honourable attitude towards the cartoons published against the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). Group chairman, MP Ali Al-Hajeri, said that Swedish officials have denounced what was published in a Danish newspaper and said it should not publish any more cartoons that might cause any misunderstanding or distress. He noted that the Swedish government had blocked an Internet site on which the original cartoons were published. He praised this attitude towards Muslims and called on all countries not to publish anything against Islamic religion.
