Summer School on Documenting Endangered Iranian Languages <br>University of Kiel, Department of General Linguistics, <br>August 20-31, 2007. <br><br>The Summer School will provide a solid grounding in the theory and practice 
<br>of language documentation, with an emphasis on the Iranian languages, but <br>including other languages spoken across the Middle East and Central Asia. <br>It will be suitable for undergraduates and graduates in linguistics, 
<br>anthropology, ethnology or related fields with at least two years training <br>in linguistics, and a genuine interest in conducting future research on the <br>endangered languages and cultures of the region. The course language is 
<br>English. <br><br>The course is financed by the Volkswagen Foundation's programme for <br>documenting endangered languages (DoBeS, Dokumentation Bedrohter Sprachen). <br>Much of the expertise stems from experienced field workers and language 
<br>archivists involved in that programme. The courses offered will cover the <br>fundamentals of language documentation such as recording practice and <br>equipment, sound processing software, tools for grammar and dictionary 
<br>creation, and hands-on practice in linguistic field work. There will also <br>be seminars and lectures on anthropological topics, working with diaspora <br>communities, specifics of the Iranian languages, and archiving issues. 
<br><br>Note also that the Second International Conference on Iranian Linguistics <br>is scheduled for the weekend immediately prior to the Summer School, and <br>will take place in Hamburg, just one hour´s drive from Kiel - see
