Language and community groups are launching a national petition for "education through Irish" in the west Kerry Gaeltacht. It is the latest development in an ongoing row in the community over the all-Irish policy of Dingle's new secondary school, Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne. Legal action in the High Court is being pursued by parents who want their children to have an option to be taught through English in the school. The new state-of-the art 470-pupil community school, run by a board of trustees and the Kerry Education Service, opened last September. It replaced two secondary schools in which it was claimed there was a more relaxed policy towards the teaching of subjects through Irish.

Yesterday, Tuismitheoiri na Gaeltachta said a petition will be advertised in newspapers and on the website gaelport.com this week, seeking support nationally for Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne's Irish Language policy, "a policy unanimously agreed at a parents meeting on 24 January 2006". "If other parents want an English language school to be established, nobody is opposing them or the Department in doing so, but this should not be done at the expense of Gaeltacht children being educated through Irish," a spokesman said.
