Canada's first K-12 Confucius Institute opened in Edmonton Sunday and promises to bolster the already remarkable Chinese language learning programs at public schools, said board chair Bev Esslinger. Confucius Institutes exist in dozens of countries and are traditionally associated with post-secondary institutions. The non-profits institutes - whose headquarters lie in Bejiing - follow the guidance of cultural officials in China to help shape Chinese foreign language programs in other countries.<br>
