<br>In a surprise move an alternative multilingualism report was passed at Plenary in the European Parliament today led by a coalition of MEPs, Maria Badia (PES), Ignasi Guardans (ALDE) and Mikel Irujo (EFA-Greens), and backed by the language NGO EBLUL. The alternative resolution overturned the controversial report tabled by Vasco Graca Moura (EPP), winning by 335 votes to 279 with 69 abstentions.<br>
<br>Council of Europe publishes second report on regional languages in Austria <br><br>The Council of Europe Committee of Ministers published the second report on the situation of regional languages in Austria on Monday (16th March). This report has been drawn up by a committee of independent experts which monitors the application of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.<br>
<br>Liet International 2009: call for contestants <br><br>Liet, the lesser-used language song contest, has put out a call for contestants for the 6th Liet International in Ljouwert, Fryslan. The event will be held on Saturday October 31st 2009 in the Frisian capital of Ljouwert (Leeuwarden).<br>
<br>Catalans march in Brussels for self-determination <br><br>Up to 10,000 Catalans marched through Brussels on Saturday 7th March to call for self-determination for their country. The march, organised by various civil society groups under the platform of ‘Deu mil a Brusellas per l’autodeterminacio’, ended with calls for an independence referendum and to deal with the problems facing the Catalan language.<br>
