<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><st1:country-region w:st="on">Slovakia</st1:country-region> considers its new language law, which has provoked protests from neighboring <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Hungary</st1:place></st1:country-region>, an internal affair, an official said Thursday. </P>

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Peter Stano, a spokesman for the Slovak Foreign Ministry, said <st1:country-region w:st="on">Slovakia</st1:country-region> and <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Hungary</st1:place></st1:country-region> nevertheless will hold private talks on the language law amendment, which would impose fines for using national minority tongues.</P>

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Hungarian lawmakers in <st1:City w:st="on">Budapest</st1:City> Monday called on <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Slovakia</st1:place></st1:country-region> to cancel the law before it takes effect Sept.1.</P>

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">The law stipulates people who use minority languages in public services in regions where a minority makes up less than 20 percent of the local population would be fined from $140 to $7,000.</P>
