<br>Faculty of Education<br><br>University of British Columbia<br><br><br>The Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, invites applications for the position of Head, Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED). The Department is one of four in the Faculty of Education, with over 40 faculty members (including sessional appointments) engaged in a range of scholarship and projects locally, nationally and internationally. Faculty are active in research and teaching in Literacy Education in cultural contexts, Teaching English as a Second Language, Modern Language Education and Teacher Librarianship. There is a strong interest in community and local literacies and in global, multilingual and new literacies development in both formal and informal educational contexts and across the lifespan. The Department also contributes to the interdisciplinary MA in Children's Literature program with the Faculty of Arts, and maintains a strong interest in the teaching of verbal and related arts, particularly literature and drama/theatre education.<br>
<br>We are currently seeking applications from individuals with an international reputation and a strong record of research and publication in language and literacy education and instruction, and related fields. Applicants should have interests in key areas of the Department and a desire to interact with colleagues from different fields of study within the Department, Faculty of Education, UBC, and the wider community.<br>
<br>Applicants should show evidence of administrative experience and strategic planning, including budgets, along with demonstrated leadership, team-building, mentoring, problem-solving and interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will be expected to hold an academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure.<br>
<br>The headship appointment is for a period of up to 5 years, with the potential for renewal. The appointment is effective July 1, 2010 or a date agreed upon by the University and the successful applicant, and subject to final budgetary approval. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.<br>
