<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" ><tr><td valign="top" style="font: inherit;"><DIV>Dear Dr Frazer , </DIV>
<DIV>I think you are right , we have to quote the author from both editions using diferrent dates , let's say :</DIV>
<DIV>Labov (1984) states : ".................." </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>and labov (1971) : states : ".............." </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I think, even if it is not a new edition which will forcebly contain some modifications as with MyersScoton's (1993 ,1997) , if it is even a matter of reprint , we should use the date of the enw edition , because we are not sure if the quotations still remain in the same pages and lines as in the initial edition . What do you think so ? </DIV>
<DIV>we should just refer to the 1st edition or reprint in the bibliography , taht wil be helpful for the readers . </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>all the best and once again thank you for your eluminating comments </DIV>

<DIV class=plainMail>Don't forget that there is a difference between a reprint and a new edition. The date of a reprint doesn't matter as the text is the same, but a new edition includes some re-writes.<BR><BR>If you want to discuss her views in the historical context of the subject and at the same time reflect her current thinking, you could do something like:<BR><BR>"Myers-Scotton first developed the concept in 1993 (Myers-Scotton 1993) and has continued to refine it." Then refer to her very latest work to discuss it. I would list both editions separately.<BR><BR>You can get into problems with later editions, because someone else can be using the concept in, say, 1995, perhaps disagreeing, and it makes it look as if they are responding to something in the future.<BR><BR>Anthea<BR>* * * * *<BR>Anthea Fraser Gupta (Dr)<BR>School of English, University of
