<div><b>April Laktonen Counceller, Ph.D.</b> (Alutiiq/Sugpiaq), Manager of Alutiiq Language Program of Alutiiq Museum in Kodiak, Alaska will share the work of their New Words Council and how it contributes to identity, healing, resilience and community survival. In her presentation entitled “Niugneliyukut - We are Making New Words” she will discuss the Alutiiq New Words Council in Kodiak, Alaska, began in 2007 to address the lack of modern terms in the Alutiiq language. Counceller will discuss the social context of the New Words Council (NWC) within the Alutiiq heritage movement as well as the value and meaning of the council to participants. Her research, undertaken as part of a 2010 doctoral dissertation from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, concludes that the value of the NWC goes beyond new terms, contributing to identity, healing, resistance, and community survival. She will also discuss practical aspects of new words creation in Kodiak such as common methods employed by Elders, meeting structure, and etymological breakdown of selected new terms. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: georgia,palatino;"><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><b>Keola Donaghy</b>, Assistant Professor of Hawaiian Studies, University of Hawai’i Hilo will share Hawaiian experiences in developing online language environment and how the community is affected by this medium. For the past twenty-five years advocates of the Hawaiian language face many challenges in their efforts to revitalize and reestablish Hawaiian as a language of the home, school, and community. With the increasing emphasis of technology in the school, business and home, the creation and implementation of new lexicon to address the use of technology has been a priority. The Hale Kuamo‘o at ‘Aha Pnana Leos has led the development of new lexicon and tools for Hawaiian speakers, and their joint publication of “Mmaka Kaiao”, a new Hawaiian language lexicon, has been indispensible in these efforts. He will provide some background into the formation and operation of the kmike hualelo (The Hawaiian Lexicon Committee), how they create new lexicon, the issues that they face in implementing new words, and how they are used in technology through localized applications, both binary and web-based.</span></span></div>
