Dear colleagues <br><br>There has been some interesting discussion of 'language in the riots' on this list recently. I've been contacted by a journalist looking for 'someone who specialises in sociolinguistics to
comment on David Starkey's recent remarks on Newsnight'. Would anyone like to contact him? (see below)<br><br>Best wishes<br><br>Julia<br><br><br><div class="gmail_quote">---------- Forwarded message ----------<br>

<div><br></div><div>I am a freelance journalist and criminologist, have worked at Al-Jazeera English and regularly blog for the Huffington Post on issues related to criminal justice, criminology and penology.</div>
<div><br></div><div>Currently I am writing an article on the lack of criminologists as sources in relation to reporting on the recent riots (which I intend to pitch to national papers). In order to highlight the importance of using appropriate sources when analysing events, I was hoping to find someone who specialises in sociolinguistics to comment on David Starkey's recent remarks on Newsnight.</div>
<div><br></div><div>As an historian specialising in the Tudor period, I feel it is questionable that he was given such platform to comment on an area well outside his purview and I would like to include a quotation on this from a linguistic academic. Would you be willing to be quoted in my article, or could you refer me to someone else if you feel that they would be better suited?</div>

<div><br></div><div>Any help that you may be able to afford me would be gratefully received and I will understand if you do not wish to be quoted in the public sphere.</div><div><br></div><div>Many thanks.</div><div><br>
