<div><span style="font-size:11pt">My name is Kaweienón:ni (Margaret) Cook-Peters. I’m Snipe Clan, Onondaga Nation of the Hotinonhson:ni. I am from the Mohawk Territory of Ahkwesahsne. I am a first language speaker of the Mohawk language. I currently work for the Ahkwesáhsne Mohawk Board of Education as Mohawk Language (Kanien’kéha) Specialist. I have four beautiful children Tehata:se 28, Kawennahen:te 24, Teioswathe 23, Nihahsenna:a 21. The three younger children are fluent speakers and are all immersion teachers at the Ahkwesahne Freedom School where I began my career in language teaching and curriculum development. I also have 6 beautiful grandchildren. The two oldest ages 7 and 4 are first language speakers of the Mohawk Language. AFS is a full immersion school whose focus is on getting children to attain a high level of fluency and to instill their identity as Hotinonhsón:ni (People of Longhouse). My children are part of a small portion of our youth from within our confederacy who still speak their language. My husband Theodore is also an immersion teacher and a radio DJ and has his own weekly language show broadcast entirely in the Mohawk<span> </span>Language. </span><span style="font-size:11pt">My involvement with language advocacy includes being a member of the First Nations Sweetgrass Language Committee Inc. as First Speaker and I sat as a commissioner when the Anishinaabek Muskegowuk Onkwehon:we Language Council of Oniatarí:io (AMO) first formed. I am a certified teacher and I’ve also obtained my certification as a First Nations Principal through Queen’s University and I am a teacher for the Queen’s ATEP teaching immersion teaching strategies. I have taught language at all levels from Pre-school to University and at the community level.</span></div>

<div><span style="font-size:11pt">To hear your grandchild's first word is the most precious thing in the world and my grandson said "Tóta" when he was 10 months old. Tóta is the term used for either grandparent in the Mohawk Language. As a family we made a conscious effort to speak only the Mohawk language to him. It was amazing to hear him begin to formulate his gibberish, his words, and his phrases until we could converse with him entirely in the language. It wasn't easy in a mostly English environment, competing with the television, radio, other children who didn't speak the language and family members who in spite of being fluent, wouldn't speak the language to him. He is 7 years old and is bilingual in both Mohawk and English with Mohawk being his first language. His name is Rarennenhá:wi which means “he carries a song”.</span></div>
