Meeting Description:<br><br>
This is the first conference in a series of five hosted by the
Leverhulme international network project, English in Europe: Opportunity
or Threat? The aim of this opening conference is to gain a comparative
understanding of the debates surrounding the role and status of English
in Europe today. <br> <br>This conference will set the agenda for the
subsequent conferences of the project, and a selection of the papers
will be published as a journal special issue. Keynote speakers include
David Block (Institute of Education) and Sue Wright (University of
Portsmouth).<br><br>
Call for Papers: <br> <br>Proposals are now sought for papers of 30 minutes in length, or for posters, on any of the following or related topics: <br> <br>The teaching of English <br>Language policy and language management (including language education policy) <br>
Language attitudes <br>Media discourses on English <br>Discourses of English as a lingua franca and global language <br>English and globalisation <br>English language hegemony and language diversity <br>English and language rights <br>
Comparison with other areas of the world <br> <br>Proposals
should include the title of the paper/poster, the name and contact
details of the author(s) and an abstract of less than 500 words. They

no later than 9 December 2011, and you will be informed of the outcome
by mid-January 2012. The final date for booking a place on the
