Meeting Description:

Towards a Theory of Global Translation? The Impact of Globalization on Translation
To be held at the 11th ESSE conference

The
11th ESSE (European Society for the Study of English) Conference will
take place at Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey, from 4 to 8
September 2012. Further information about the conference is available
from the conference website, http://www.esse2012.org.

Boğaziçi
University has long been recognized as one of Turkey's best
universities. For about 150 years we have sent forth alumni who carry
BU's spirit with them as they pursue their lives and careers in many
different countries. This conference promises to advance BU's
international presence and bring together members of national
associations across Europe. Academic scholars as well as students from
all over Europe will present and discuss topics in English Studies
through more than a hundred seminars, roundtables and poster sessions.
We also have a great line-up of keynote speakers including Prof. Linda
Hutcheon and Prof. Jonathan Culpeper. As in our previous conferences,
you can expect the opportunities to see old friends, meet new ones, and
network with a diversity of colleagues from a variety of institutions.

Istanbul,
the host city of the 11th ESSE Conference, was an ancient capital and
has a history of over 2500 years. A bridge between the East and the West
for centuries, Istanbul is located on the Bosporus Strait, where you'll
find a harmonious blend of culture, cuisine, arts and architecture
along with excellent shopping opportunities. It is amazing that Istanbul
still manifests both ancient and modern aspects. Highlights of Istanbul
include Topkapı Palace, Hagia Sophia, The Blue Mosque whose
architecture represents the spiritual backbone of Oriental culture;
natural landscapes with seasonal changes, traditional arts, crafts,
Turkish cuisine and Istanbul night life. It is my sincere hope that
during your time in Istanbul you will enjoy these and other elements
that embody the essence of Turkish culture.

Call for Papers:

We invite proposals for Seminar S64 'Towards a
Theory of Global Translation? The Impact of Globalization on
Translation' to be held at the 11th ESSE conference, Boğaziçi
University, Istanbul, Turkey (4-8 September 2012).

Topic Description:

Globalization
causes processes which are simultaneously happening in modern cultures,
yet in different ways and with a different degree of intensity.
Globalization affects communication and this is not only reflected in
the way the English language is used around the world but also in the
practice and quality of translations. If globalization is partly held
responsible for the fragmentation of the English language, would it be
hazardous or provocative to suggest that it can also be responsible for
the way in which translations are perceived and carried out in the
world? Many translation scholars, nowadays, claim that translation is
split into two opposing forces, 1) a centripetal force (adoption of a
global language) and 2) a centrifugal force (desire to preserve people's
own national language). The purpose of this seminar is to examine
whether and how translation has been affected by the new global economy.

Procedure for Submitting Paper Proposals:

Colleagues
wishing to participate in the seminar are invited to submit a 200-word
abstract directly to the convenors by 31 January 2012.

Convenors:

Vanessa Leonardi (University of Ferrara, IT), vanessa.leonardiunife.it
