DSL under threat from CI's.

(Description): In Netherlands, sign language as a policy is threatened.
Now 99% of deaf children from that country have cochlear implants at
the age of 1. Parents and teachers are looking at the importance of
communication through spoken language alone. It is not required for
teachers to be proficient in signing. With this attitude going around
everywhere, what is the future status of Dutch Sign Language (DSL)?

My proposed solution: It starts with parents. They need to be well
informed about signing and spoken language acquisition, language access,
and learning styles. Also this country can create an educational policy
that recognizes DSL as a language used by deaf people. It also should
state that students have the right to use the language of their choice,
which may be sign language. From this policy, teachers would be required
to be proficient in using sign language. All this means that deaf
education teacher training programs in universities will have to
improve. They train teachers to be more aware about this issue and
encourage them to be more sensitive about preserving Dutch Sign
Language.

**************************************
