<div style="text-align:left"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">The Phillips Fund of the American Philosophical Society </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">provides grants for research in Native American linguistics, ethnohistory, and the </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">history of studies of Native Americans, in the continental United States and </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Canada. Grants are not made for projects in archaeology, ethnography, </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">psycholinguistics, or for the preparation of pedagogical materials. The </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">committee distinguishes ethnohistory from contemporary ethnography as the study </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">of cultures and culture change through time. The grants are intended for such</span><br>
<span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">costs as travel, tapes, films, and consultants' fees but not for the purchase </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">of books or permanent equipment.</span></div>

<div style="text-align:left"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">The committee prefers to support the work of younger </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">scholars who have received the doctorate. Applications are also accepted from </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">graduate students for research on master’s theses or doctoral dissertations.</span></div>

<b><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Scope </span></b></div>
<div style="text-align:left"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">The Lewis and Clark Fund (initially supported by the </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Stanford Ascherman/Baruch Blumberg Fund for Basic Science, established by a </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">benefaction from the late Stanford Ascherman, MD, of San Francisco) encourages </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">exploratory field studies for the collection of specimens and data and to </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">provide the imaginative stimulus that accompanies direct observation.</span><br>
<span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt"> </span></div>
<div style="text-align:left"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Applications are invited from disciplines with a large dependence on field </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">studies, such as archeology, anthropology, biology, ecology, geography, </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">geology, linguistics, paleontology, and population genetics, but grants will </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">not be restricted to these fields.</span></div>

<b><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Eligibility</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align:left"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt"><b>Grants will be available to doctoral students.</b> Postdoctoral fellows, master’s degree</span><br>
<span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">candidates, and undergraduates are not eligible. Applicants who have previously </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">received a Lewis and Clark Fund grant may reapply after an interval of two </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">years. Preference is given to applicants who have not yet been granted an award </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">from the Fund.</span></div>
<div style="text-align:left"><br>
<span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Applicants should ask their academic advisor to write one of </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">the two letters of recommendation, specifying the student’s qualifications to </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">carry out the proposed work and the educational content of the trip. Budgets </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">should be limited to travel and related expenses, including personal field </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">equipment.</span></div>
<div style="text-align:left"><br>
<span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Proposals that are archival in nature or museum based will </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">not normally be considered. The proposed work should be dissertation directed </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">to the extent possible given the applicant’s year in the doctoral program.</span></div>
<div style="text-align:left"><br>
<span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">The competition is open to U.S. citizens and residents </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">wishing to carry out research anywhere in the world. Foreign applicants must </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">either be based at a U.S. institution or plan to carry out their work in the </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">United States. </span></div>
<div style="text-align:left"><br>
<span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">When appropriate, the applicant should provide assurances </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">that safety measures will be taken for potentially hazardous projects. When </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">necessary, the applicant and his or her supervisor should discuss the field </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">training that will be provided and the provisions for experienced supervision. </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Funding is contingent on successful applicants demonstrating that required </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">permits and permissions have been secured.</span></div>

<div style="text-align:left"><b><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Scope</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align:left"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Since 1933, the American Philosophical Society has awarded </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">small grants to scholars in order to support the cost of research leading to </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">publication in all areas of knowledge. In 2011–2012 the Franklin Research </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Grants program awarded nearly $380,000 to 77 scholars, and the Society expects </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">to make a similar number of awards in this year’s competition. The Franklin </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">program is particularly designed to help meet the costs of travel to libraries </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">and archives for research purposes; the purchase of microfilm, photocopies, or </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">equivalent research materials; the costs associated with fieldwork; or</span><br>
<span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">laboratory research expenses.</span></div>
<div style="text-align:left"><br>
<span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Franklin grants are made for noncommercial research. They </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">are not intended to meet the expenses of attending conferences or the costs of </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">publication. The Society does not pay overhead or indirect costs to any </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">institution. Grants will not be made to replace salary during a leave of </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">absence or earnings from summer teaching; pay living expenses while working at </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">home; cover the costs of consultants or research assistants; or purchase </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">permanent equipment such as computers, cameras, tape recorders, or laboratory </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">apparatus.</span></div>

<span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">The American Philosophical Society Library offers short-term residential </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">fellowships for conducting research in its collections. We are a leading </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">international center for research in the history of American science and </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">technology and its European roots, as well as early American history and </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">culture.</span></div>

<div style="text-align:left"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt"><b>Eligibility</b></span><br>
<span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">The fellowships, funded by generous benefactors, are open to both U.S. citizens </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">and foreign nationals. Applicants may be:</span></div>

<ul style="text-align:left">
<li><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Holders of the Ph.D. or its equivalent</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Ph.D. candidates who have passed their preliminary examinations</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Degreed independent scholars</span></li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align:left"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Applicants in any relevant field of </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">scholarship may apply. Candidates who live 75 or more miles from Philadelphia </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">receive some preference.</span></div>

<span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt"><b>Award</b></span><br>
<span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">A stipend of $2,500 per month is awarded for a minimum of one month and a </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">maximum of three months. The duration of award is requested by the candidate, </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">but the final decision is made by the Fellowship Committee.</span></div>
<div style="text-align:left"><br>
<span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Fellowships may be taken any time </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">beginning 1 June 2012 and must be completed by 31 May 2013. Fellows are </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">required to be in residence at the Library for four to twelve consecutive </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">weeks, depending upon the length of the award.</span></div>
<div style="text-align:left"><br>
<span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">Awards are taxable income, but </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">the Society is not required to report payments. It is understood that </span><span style="font-family:times new roman,times;font-size:12pt">recipients will discuss their reporting obligations with their tax advisors.</span></div>
