The theme of the conference was <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Language, Law and the Multilingual State</I>, and also encompassed a colloquium, <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Language legislation and litigation</I>, that focused specifically on the South African context. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify; LINE-HEIGHT: 150%; MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt" class=MsoNormal><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman','serif'; mso-ansi-language: EN-ZA" lang=EN-ZA><FONT face=Verdana><FONT size=2>This publication offers a selection of writings by jurists, linguists and social scientists on the state-juridical challenges facing multilingual societies, whether in Africa, Europe, the UK or Canada. These include the drafting and implementation of legislation, the degree and forms of state intervention and the functioning of support structures. It also addresses several related issues, such as minority and indigenous languages, globalisation and diversity, language rights, language ideology and language legislation. As a whole, this book presents the argument that a truly multilingual state requires linguistic equality and substantive language rights. In this way it contributes to the field of promotion and protection of linguistic diversity.<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></SPAN></P></SPAN></DIV>
