<p>Grandmother, Martine Knight, who started to learn Cornish in 2009
during lessons at the Blue Anchor pub, asked her fellow councillors to
adopt an official policy on using the language.</p>

how many supported the use of Cornish after I reassured them that there
would be no extra <a style="font-weight:normal;font-size:100%;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;border:0px none transparent;padding:0px;background-color:transparent;background-image:none;display:inline" class="" href="http://www.thisiscornwall.co.uk/Helston-councillors-use-Cornish-language/story-19625148-detail/story.html#" id="itxthook1" rel="nofollow"><span id="itxthook1p" class=""><span id="itxthook1w" class="" style="font-weight:normal;font-size:100%;text-decoration:underline!important;border-width:0px 0px 1px;border-style:none none solid;border-color:transparent transparent rgb(0,204,0);padding:0px 0px 1px!important;color:rgb(0,153,0);background-color:transparent">costs</span><img class="" id="itxthook1icon" src="http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png" style="padding: 0px 0px 0px 4px ! important; margin: 0px ! important; vertical-align: baseline ! important;"></span></a>.”</p>
<p>Councillors voted in favour of a policy that will see the Cornish language initially used on council letter heads and agendas.</p>
<p>Mrs Knight said she was not asking for the council to have
everything translated into Cornish, nor were staff asked to be fluent.</p>
<p>The policy she said had already been adopted by other council’s
including Truro City Council, and is used on bilingual street signs and
public documents.</p>
<p>The former secretary of Helston Old Cornwall Society, praised the
folk of Wales and their use of the native language, which is taught in
schools, adding: “They’ve come a long way in just 25 years and it
would be lovely to think we could do the same.</p>
<p>“It is unlikely in the current climate because of the level of costs, but it is something to aim for.”</p>
<p>She is known as Mammwynn - grandmother in Cornish- by her
grandchildren and pupils at St Michael’s, where she regularly reads to
youngsters.</p>
<p>“I have used books that contain Cornish phrases and sentences and
they loved it. It is wonderful to see them taking such an interest.”</p>
<p>She said people can learn tamm-ha-tam (bit by bit) with the help
of the Cornish language Partnership which offers courses in Cornish.
Other phrases to try are mar pleg - please and meur ras - thank you.</p>
