<p>
<span class="">HERNANDO, Miss.</span> — DeSoto
County Schools has implemented a new policy to comply with state law
regarding students with speech or language impairments.</p><p>Board
members this week approved the policy, which Associate Supt. Keith
Williams said brings the district into compliance with a bill passed by
the Mississippi House this year that deals with speech and language
therapy.</p><p>Under the new policy, students will be screened before
the end of the first grade for articulation, language, voice and fluency
disorders. The parents of any student who fails will be notified, and
the district may perform a more comprehensive speech-language
evaluation.</p><p>The Commercial Appeal reports (<a href="http://bit.ly/HgCpXe">http://bit.ly/HgCpXe</a> )
the policy also gives parents the right to opt out of the mandatory
screening.</p><p>Board members approved the policy unanimously and without discussion. </p></div></div><br><a href="http://www.sunherald.com/2013/10/24/5055485/policy-on-speech-language-impairments.html">http://www.sunherald.com/2013/10/24/5055485/policy-on-speech-language-impairments.html</a><br clear="all">
