<i style="margin:0px;padding:0px">This is what President Viktor Yanukovych said in his message to congratulate his compatriots on the Ukrainian Writing and Language Day. "I assure you that the authorities will continue their efforts to implement a responsible and prudent policy aimed to support and develop the Ukrainian language based on the principles of social unity and harmony," Yanukovych said.</i></p>

He noted that the written word from the times of Kievan Rus has contributed to the intellectual rise of the people, safeguarding its original spiritual traditions, national identity and culture. "A decisive place in the emergence of the modern Ukrainian literary language belongs to Taras Shevchenko - the glorious genius, whose 200th birth anniversary we will mark publicly the following year. The Kobzar's precepts have become our sign, for they are full of love for the native land, a belief in a happy future for it. They also today inspire us to noble deeds, which endorse Ukraine's path to the European community," the message reads.</p>
