<b>PIEDMONT</b> — Piedmont Board of Education members learned at a Tuesday meeting that the system is taking part in a state monitoring program.<br><br>Next week a representative of the Alabama Department of Education’s Office of Career and Technical Education will visit the school for one day to begin a review, said Superintendent Matt Akin. He said Piedmont had been selected at random by the office for the monitoring session. <br>
<br>He said the monitoring program is already prompting the system to consider a revision of certain policies and procedures. At Tuesday’s board meeting Akin presented two new policies and also asked members to considering adding a non-discriminatory statement to several existing policies. <br>
<br>The first new policy, a Limited English Proficiency policy, would require educators within the first 30 days of school to formally identify children who don’t understand the English language and to notify their parents. <br>
<br>“It’s a way of showing the state we are providing a service to those students and how we are providing that service,” Akin said, referencing the language program. “It’s in line with what we’ve already been doing for years.”<br>
<br>The second policy, concerning Cooperative Education, would set forth a framework for the system to begin an on-the-job training program for students, if officials decided to go that route.<br><br>The proposed non-discriminatory statement is three paragraphs long and would be applied to six other policies to ensure the schools’ employees and students receive equal opportunities. The statement also lists people to contact regarding non-discrimination policies. <br>
<br>The school board received a copy of the policy Tuesday and postponed a vote to give the public a chance comment on it before it votes on the measures next month, Akin said.</div><span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:Arial;font-size:13px;line-height:18px"><br>
