The renowned Mexican author Carlos Fuentes once remarked that America?s monolingualism is a great paradox: We?re the dominant world power, yet also the world?s most linguistically isolated one. The numbers appear to bear this out. Roughly 17% of U.S. citizens can speak more than one language, compared with 54% of Europeans. Stanford Professor Russell A. Berman, former president of the Modern Language Association, has warned that the U.S. is quickly becoming a nation of ?second language illiterates.?<br>

English as a medium of instruction ? a growing global phenomenon<br>
<br>

<br>
There is a fast-moving worldwide shift from English being taught as a foreign language (EFL) to English being the medium of instruction (EMI) for academic subjects such as science, mathematics, geography and medicine. EMI is increasingly being used in universities, secondary schools and even primary schools. This phenomenon has very important implications for the education of young people and policy decisions in non-anglophone countries. Yet little empirical research has been conducted into why and when EMI is being introduced and how it is delivered. What are the consequences of introducing EMI on teaching, learning, assessing and teacher professional development?<br>
<br>
The British Council is working with Oxford University Department of Education?s (OUDE) research centre, EMI Oxford, on a global scoping research project to try to answer some of these questions. The first phase of the project has been to map the size and shape of EMI in the world today. The full report of phase 1 will be available in November 2014. This report briefly sets out the findings of the research so far.<br>

Professors at the University of Chicago have renewed their opposition to the Chinese-government funded Confucius Institute on their campus, with more than 100 of them signing a petition calling on the Council of the University Senate to vote to terminate the university?s contract with Hanban, the government entity that oversees the centers of Chinese language teaching and research.<br>

LANSI brings together scholars and students working on<br>
naturally-occurring data within the broad area of language and social<br>
interaction. In keeping with the LANSI spirit of diversity and dialog,<br>
we welcome abstracts from colleagues working on a variety of topics<br>
using discourse analytic approaches that include but are not limited to<br>
conversation analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, linguistic<br>
anthropology, and critical discourse analysis. Abstracts should be<br>
no longer than 300 words and should include descriptions of the<br>
following aspects of the study: (1) problem(s) being addressed; (2)<br>
central claim(s); (3) data source(s) and analytic approach(es); (4) a<br>
short piece of data to support the main argument; (5) implication(s) of<br>
the findings. Please also include a 50-word summary. Abstracts will be<br>
blind-reviewed on the basis of clarity, specificity, originality, and<br>
the inclusion of the required components. Papers will be presented<br>
within a 15 or 20-minute slot with an additional 10 or 5 minutes for<br>
discussion.<br>

Deadline for electronic submission is May 30, 2014. Notification of<br>
acceptance or non-acceptance will be sent via email by July 15, 2014.<br>

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:<br>

Assist with tasks related to test development, test refreshment, and research for tests of English.<br>
<br>
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:<br>

* Assist with development of item writing procedures and processes, including preparing written protocols and checklists<br>
* Write, review, and revise test items to adhere to specification sheets and to identify errors<br>
* Contribute to data collection, data entry, coding, and analysis<br>
* Draft portions of written reports and presentations<br>
* Communicate with partners and external colleagues to assist in various aspects of data collection<br>
* Proof and copyedit materials according to style guide<br>
* Other duties as assigned related to language testing and research projects<br>

QUALIFICATIONS:<br>

* Education: BA/BS degree in a related field and 3 years of related experience or a MA/MS degree in a relevant field<br>
* Experience: Successful candidate will have experience working with language testing and/or international education<br>

DESIRED SKILLS:<br>

* The preferred candidate will be a motivated self-starter with the ability to work flexibly and cooperatively in a fast paced team environment. Excellent skills in the following areas are highly desirable: native or native-like proficiency in English; proficiency in the use of Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access, thoroughness in execution of task assignments; proficiency in a language other than English, particularly Spanish; and excellent time management and adherence to deadlines.<br>

US Teachers Nowhere as Diverse as Their Students<br>

Almost half the students attending public schools are minorities, yet fewer than 1 in 5 of their teachers is nonwhite.<br>
<br>
New studies from the Center for American Progress and the National Education Association are calling attention to this "diversity gap" at elementary and secondary schools in the United States. The groups want more to be done to help teachers more accurately mirror the students in their classrooms.<br>
