Modern languages departments and scholars should look at how Classics has reinvented itself since the 1980s in order to boost its appeal to undergraduates, a scholar has argued.<br>

It success was reflected, noted Roderick Beaton, Koraes professor of modern Greek and Byzantine history, language and culture at King?s College London, in ?a large enough undergraduate cohort in over 20 higher education institutions to sustain a robust and internationally envied research culture?.<br>

Latino Groups Sue Texas Public Schools Over English Language Learning, Say Programs Are 'Grossly Deficient'<br>

On Tuesday, Latino advocacy groups filed a lawsuit against Texas claiming that the state's schools do not provide enough resources for English language learners.<br>
<br>
The 27-page-long complaint was filed by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund representing the League of United Latin American Citizens, Associated Press reports. The lawsuit claims Texas is not adhering to the Equal Educational Opportunities Act of 1974, which says that a state can't hold a student back by not taking "appropriate action to overcome language barriers that impede equal participation."<br>

The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Associate on a contract until Aug 31st 2015 (with strong possibility for annual renewal until end of 2017) at the Centre for Research in Pedagogy & Practice.<br>

Project Title: Preschool Impact Upon Child Outcomes: A Longitudinal Study of Transition from Preschool to Primary<br>
<br>
Project Introduction: The project aims to evaluate the academic, cognitive, and socio-emotional outcomes for children as they enter primary school, and how these vary according to the process and structural factors of the preschool environment. In this study, we focus on the nature and impact of teacher-child interactions as a key process factor, along with other structural factors (class size, teacher-child ratio, physical environment and teacher qualifications, training and experience) to arrive at an overall measure of the quality of the children?s learning experiences. Our main aim is to examine how these process and structural factors, together with factors associated with the home background, influence children?s developmental outcomes across the preschool period, and influence their readiness for starting primary school. Specifically, we will focus on their impact on the development of children?s mathematical and language and literacy skills (English and Mother Tongue), self-regulation, and socio-emotional competencies. The project will involve one-to-one testing with preschool children, observation in classrooms, and data collection from parents and teachers.<br>

Requirements and Responsibilities<br>
<br>
For the post of research fellow, we are particularly interested in individuals who may be able to head up research in a specific mother tongue (Mandarin, Malay, or Tamil).<br>
<br>

* Recent PhD or about to complete PhD in Psychology, Education, or Linguistics<br>
* Good theoretical knowledge of research designs in general<br>
* Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills<br>
* Excellent organizational skills and able to work within given deadlines<br>

? Excellent problem-solving skills<br>

* Work closely with the project leaders and MOE colleagues to ensure reliable and on-time collection of data, and assume some intellectual responsibility for the project.<br>

? Propose, design and implement appropriate research methodologies<br>
<br>
? Resolve research problems and manage research variables.<br>
<br>
? Present research findings to a variety of audiences using multiple formats<br>
<br>
? Write research reports and papers independently<br>
<br>
* Manage research project including scheduling and liaising with schools, and leading a team of research assistants and associates<br>
* Coordinate and assist in data collection<br>

? Conduct literature and database searches; identify key findings of previous research and summarise the literature surveys / past research papers<br>

* Manage research data and keep up-to-date research records, summarise research findings and be able to perform data analyses<br>

Immigrant Integration Resource Development Specialist<br>

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:<br>

Use expertise in refugee resettlement, writing, research, and technical assistance provision to further RII?s work in providing publications, resources, and technical assistance to an increasingly broad array of service providers and community members working on refugee resettlement and immigrant integration as well as to newcomer populations themselves.<br>
<br>
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:<br>
<br>
* Research and write content for COR Center publications<br>
* Coordinate content and contributions of subject matter experts to COR Center publications<br>
* Adapt current COR Center publications to create resources available for different purposes<br>
* Develop new content for the COR Center Web site, including materials focusing upon immigrant integration<br>
* Create COR Center outreach materials<br>
* Conduct and synthesize information from interviews and surveys to inform COR Center provision of technical assistance<br>
* Provide refugee resettlement content area knowledge to COR Center and contracted game developers regarding online learning environment<br>
* Locate and coordinate client group play testers for online learning environment<br>
* Conduct related research and spearhead creation and implementation of online training programs related to COR Center content<br>
* Provide research support to other COR Center staff<br>
* Use content knowledge and research skills to provide technical assistance in response to client requests for information and referrals<br>
* Conduct research to identify development opportunities<br>
* Participate in development of proposals<br>
* Assist with logistics for COR Center workshops and other activities<br>
* Maintain the membership list of the Refugee Discussion electronic discussion group<br>
* Other activities as assigned by the RII Director and Associate Director<br>

Minimum Qualifications:<br>
<br>
* Education: Bachelor?s degree in related field and five years of related experience or Master?s degree with two years of related experience are required.<br>
* Experience: The preferred candidate will have experience working with refugees and immigrants in a resettlement- and/or integration-related context.<br>
<br>

* The preferred candidate will be a self-motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as cooperatively in a fast-paced team environment, and the ability to switch between a variety of tasks as the situation warrants. The position also calls for highly-developed skills in research, writing, and oral and interpersonal communication with colleagues and client populations, as well as in organization, planning, and time management.<br>
