Banihal, Aug 31: Well-known writers, poets and
academicians Sunday asked political parties of Jammu and Kashmir to
define their policy vis-a-vis preservation of Kashmiri language and
culture in their manifestos for the forthcoming elections.

They were speaking at the 35th Annual Kashir Conference of Adbee Markaz Kamraz (AMK), which concluded here today.

The conference resolved that all political parties especially those
operating from Kashmir should include ‘promotion of Kashmiri language’
in their election manifestos as an ‘important issue’ to protect it for
future generation.
The literati also cautioned the political parties and groups for
ignoring Kashmiri language and indulging in wrongdoings vis-a-vis
Kashmiri language.

On the occasion several other important resolutions were also passed for
safeguarding and promotion of Kashmiri language in the state.
The resolutions included demand for National Council for Promotion of
Kashmiri Language, making Kashmiri language compulsory for
Administrative Officers of Jammu and Kashmir cadre, classical status for
Kashmiri language, inclusion of Kashmiri as a subject in schools of
Jammu region.

The resolutions, unanimously passed during the two-day conference, were
presided over by former bureaucrat Muhammad Shafi Pandit.
policy towards the preservation and promotion of Kashmiri language and
literature.

“Many hurdles were created by the bureaucracy against our demand for
making Kashmiri as an evaluative subject in all the schools of Kashmir
division up to secondary level. This is really unfortunate as we will be
forced to come on roads in protest,” he said in his key note address.
Poet and writer Rafiq Raaz said Kashmir’s future generation would remain underdeveloped if we ignored our language.
“Broken language and culture doesn’t have the long life provided they
recover from the onslaught,” he said during the inaugural session.
expanding beyond Valley. AMK reached out to Kashmiri speaking people
living in Chenab Valley and Pir Panjal which gives us a satisfaction as
it helps in bridging the gap after long time.”
Several literary and poetic events were also part of the conference held
in the joint compound of Government Degree College and Government Boys
Higher Secondary School, Banihal. These were organized by the Jammu and
Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL), Sahitya
Akademi, Radio Kashmir and Doordarshan Kendra, Srinagar.
