Appointment of special officers to ensure use of “correct” Marathi on
TV channels, penal provisions for bureaucrats and institutions if they
do not use Marathi in official work, Marathi menu cards in hotels and
restaurants and 50 per cent reservation in MNC jobs for
Marathi-speaking population are some of the recommendations that have
found place in the draft of Marathi language policy of Maharashtra
government for next 25 years.

The draft is open for public feedback till December 15. It was recently put up on state government’s website, www.maharashtra.gov.in
A multi-member expert panel led by writer and academician Nagnath
Kotapalle has framed the policy, which also recommends higher education
in Marathi medium and availability of Marathi-compatible computers.

The draft also observes that the government machinery and judiciary
do not use Marathi in day-to-day working despite a formal resolve to
this effect. It stresses that the use of Marathi is almost nowhere in
financial institutions as well as industry.

Ganesh Shetty, president of Pune Restaurant and Hoteliers’
Association, said menu cards and bills in Marathi would pose problem to
customers visiting establishments in multi-lingual areas such as
Koregaon Park and Camp in the city. “We will have to print new menu
cards, which will be an extra cost burden. Otherwise, we do not think
there will be a major problem,” he said.

Panel head Kotapalle said all recommendations made in the draft policy were feasible and could be practically implemented.

“Our attitude to see realistic things as unrealistic when it comes to
conservation and promotion of Marathi language is the real barrier. The
state government plays the role of facilitator as well as regulator
even for the private sector. Therefore, it can easily implement all the
recommendations,” he said.

The policy, spelling out its objectives to be achieved in a
time-bound manner, envisages stability and support for Marathi language
on different fronts during the next 25 years by developing a liking for
the regional language and making it a global language.

- See more at: http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-others/a-blueprint-to-make-marathi-global/#sthash.sduRxMn8.dpuf

--

**************************************
N.b.: Listing on the lgpolicy-list is merely intended as a service to its members
and implies neither approval, confirmation nor agreement by the owner or sponsor of the list as to the veracity of a message's contents.
