suspended plans to withdraw the licence of Curro’s embattled Roodeplaat
private school in Pretoria, which was accused of racial segregation
earlier this year.</div></div></div><div class=""><p>The decision to revoke Roodeplaat’s operating
licence was taken after new allegations of racial segregation surfaced
this month, Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said on Friday.</p><p>But
the Gauteng Education Department has suspended plans to withdraw the
licence, after Curro Holdings executives on Wednesday made numerous
commitments that include firing the current principal and the
appointment of a "diversity consultant", Mr Lesufi said.</p><p>The
management structure at the school will be expanded to include a new
operational head, the department will assist the school to recruit
suitably qualified teachers to make its all-white staff more in line
with employment equity targets. When transported, pupils will not be
separated according to race or language.</p><p>Curro’s Roodeplaat school
in Pretoria has now been at the centre of two highly public disputes of
alleged racial segregation this year. In February the school was
accused of segregating pupils into different classes based on their race
— while the school said its pupils were separated according to language
policy, not race. In May, a report into the incident ultimately found
there was separation of classes based on race. While the report was
damning, Mr Lesufi said there were undertakings from Curro and a licence
withdrawal at the time was not justified.</p><p>In June, a video
surfaced showing pupils disembarking from buses being separated into two
groups again according to race — again sparking a furore.</p><p>Despite
the second group of English pupils containing some white pupils, Mr
Lesufi said on Friday the department would not tolerate language or
culture being used as an excuse for non-racial schools.</p><p>The company has until October to implement these resolutions, although the licence can be revoked at anytime, said Mr Lesufi.</p><p>"I have suspended my decision, I have not cancelled my decision," he said.</p><p><a href="http://www.bdlive.co.za/national/education/2015/06/26/school-in-racial-row-allowed-to-keep-licence-after-agreeing-to-changes">http://www.bdlive.co.za/national/education/2015/06/26/school-in-racial-row-allowed-to-keep-licence-after-agreeing-to-changes</a><br></p></div><br clear="all"><br>-- <br><div class="gmail_signature">**************************************<br>N.b.: Listing on the lgpolicy-list is merely intended as a service to its members<br>and implies neither approval, confirmation nor agreement by the owner or sponsor of the list as to the veracity of a message's contents.
