<p>CINCINNATI — Put those sleeping bags in storage, parents. Cincinnati Public Schools is ending campouts to get into <a href="http://fairview.cps-k12.org">Clifton-Fairview German Language School</a> and other popular magnets — at least for now.</p><p>As
first reported at WCPO.com, the school board has suspended its policy
of reserving some seats at its magnet schools on a first-come,
first-served basis. Officials are considering permanent revisions to the
way students enroll at the district's magnet schools, which draw
children from throughout the district.</p><p>The suspension of the
policy and plans for a permanent structure end the annual ritual of
parents camping out on the lawn of Clifton-Fairview, a kindergarten
through sixth grade elementary school coveted by parents for its
immersive German language curriculum and exemplary academics. Last
October, the campout lasted a record 16 days and nights.</p><p><a href="http://sandsmontessori.cps-k12.org">Sands Montessori</a>, <a href="http://datermontessori.cps-k12.org">Dater Montessori</a> and <a href="http://nams.cps-k12.org">North Avondale Montessori</a> also attract much shorter camp outs some years.</p>
<p>Instead, about 30 percent of kindergarten seats will be assigned
through a lottery for families whose neighborhood school is one of the
six worst-performing in the city. Younger siblings of current magnet
school students will still have priority, along with other subsets like
children of teachers and staff.</p><p>All the remaining seats will be subject to a lottery.</p><p>"This
is going to be a waiver for one year so we can pilot a broader kind of
lottery and get feedback from families," said Melanie Bates, the school
board member who introduced the waiver. "If we get more lottery
applications, we would be more apt to open up more classrooms."</p><p> </p>

<p> </p><p>Bates said demand for spots at some of these coveted
schools has increased to the point that the district is looking for ways
to expand some schools.</p><p>"We want to keep the millennials in the
city and in our school system," she said. "The first-come, first-served
system didn't give a good picture of who wanted to come to our magnet
schools."</p><p>More at: <a href="http://www.wcpo.com/news/insider/the-campouts-are-history-at-clifton-fairview-german-language-school-at-least-this-year">http://www.wcpo.com/news/insider/the-campouts-are-history-at-clifton-fairview-german-language-school-at-least-this-year</a><br></p><br clear="all"><br>-- <br><div class="gmail_signature">**************************************<br>N.b.: Listing on the lgpolicy-list is merely intended as a service to its members<br>and implies neither approval, confirmation nor agreement by the owner or sponsor of the list as to the veracity of a message's contents.
