Last month at the Institute of International Education Generation Study Abroad Summit, Dr. Michael Nugent, director of the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO), unveiled a new IIE report on language proficiency, based on research
completed on the experience of nearly 2,500 Boren Awardees. <br>
<br>
DLNSEO funds the Boren Scholarships and Fellowships, as well as the other National Security Education Program (NSEP) initiatives that IIE manages, including The Language Flagship, Project GO, the Language Training Centers, and the English for Heritage Language
Speakers Program.<br>
<br>
As many of you know, NSEP has been assessing the oral language proficiency of Boren Awardees since the 1990s. This report represents the largest presentation of data on oral language proficiency development by U.S. college and university students during study
abroad, and in scope, represents the greatest number of host countries and languages studied to date.<br>
<br>
The study clearly demonstrates the importance of promoting longer term (6 months plus) study abroad experiences in promoting language gain, and the success of implementing this preference for long-term study in the Boren program. We hope that you will find
this study valuable, and that you will share widely with colleagues in academia and in the private sector.<br>
