<html><head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html charset=utf-8"></head><body style="word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; -webkit-line-break: after-white-space;" class=""><b class="">CFP: Language and Health – Ethical and Policy Issues<br class=""></b><br class="">Montreal, Centre Mont-Royal<br class=""><br class="">17-18 June 2016<br class=""><br class=""><br class="">For almost a decade Health Canada has been funding important and innovative research on linguistic issues in healthcare provision, through HCALM (Health Care Access for Linguistic Minorities) Network – an interdisciplinary and interinstitutional community of researchers. The project comprises the research capacity of the larger Training and Retention of Health Professionals Project (TRHP), based at the Institute for Health and Social Policy at McGill University.<br class=""><br class="">The HCALM network now invites submissions for its 2016 annual conference on the topic of ‘language and health – ethical and policy issues’. Language and health are interrelated in myriad of ways, ranging from issues of healthcare provision in multilingual societies, to health literacy and communication among patients, practitioners and policymakers, and to discourses of health and wellbeing. In accordance with the strong interdisciplinary nature of HCALM’s community of researchers, the conference welcomes submissions which brings together theories, frameworks, concepts and methods from a broad range of disciplines in the medical sciences, social sciences and the humanities. Similarly, it invites submissions that address the significant ethical and policy issues at the interface of public health and language policy, including:<br class=""><br class="">· Healthcare provision in multilingual and multicultural societies<br class=""><br class="">· Language and the social determinants of health<br class=""><br class="">· Health communication, interpretation and (il)literacy<br class=""><br class="">· Sign languages and health<br class=""><br class="">· Language and mental health<br class=""><br class="">· Language, health and technology<br class=""><br class="">· Language regimes and health systems<br class=""><br class="">· Global English and global health<br class=""><br class="">· Cross-linguistic and cross-cultural conceptions of health and illness<div class=""><br class="">The list is suggestive rather than exhaustive, and the convenors welcome papers that explore any pertinent issues relating to the topic of the conference.</div><div class=""><br class="">Abstracts (app. 300 words) should be sent to Daniel Weinstock (<a href="mailto:daniel.weinstock2@mcgill.ca" class="">daniel.weinstock2@mcgill.ca</a>) and Yael Peled (<a href="mailto:yael.peled@mcgill.ca" class="">yael.peled@mcgill.ca</a>).
