BENGALURU: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has advocated the need for
amending the Constitution to impart primary education only in the
respective regional language of the state.

At a programme to
felicitate students who topped in Kannada medium in SSLC and PU,
Siddaramaiah said, Kannada should be the medium of instruction in
primary education, it should be the language of communication in
administration and courts.

Referring to Supreme Court order giving
parents the discretion to decide the medium of instruction of their
children in primary education, Siddaramaiah urged Prime Minister
Narendra Modi to convene a meeting of Chief Ministers of all the states
to discuss the issue. “The Constitution should be amended if necessary,”
he said.

Siddaramaiah, who had written two letters to Modi urging
him to convene a meeting of the Chief Ministers, expressed his
displeasure at Modi for not responding so far.

“Medium of
instruction issue affects all the states. The Prime Minister should
understand its importance and convene a meeting of the Chief Ministers.
English medium schools are coming up like mushrooms in villages too. It
has become a status symbol to send children to prestigious English
medium schools. It could lead to socio-economic conflict in the society.
The belief that English medium education would improve job
opportunities is a misconception. Language in itself is not knowledge.
Language is just a medium to acquire knowledge. Those who have studied
in their mother tongue have gone on to become renowned scientists,
doctors and engineers. Mother tongue is supreme. This is the view of
even language experts,” Siddaramaiah said.

Send Kids to Kannada Medium Schools: CM's Advice

Bengaluru:
CM Siddaramaiah advised parents to send their wards to Kannada medium
schools instead of desiring to send them to English medium schools. He
was speaking at an event organised by the Kannada Development Authority
on Friday to felicitate the students those who secured good marks by
studying in the Kannada medium. “Most parents have a feeling that if
their children study in the English medium, then they will become
successful. Instead, they should also look at the people, who have
achieved in life by studying in Kannada medium,” the CM said. Talking
about the recent judgement by Supreme Court on Language policy, he said
that he has sent two letters to Prime Minister requesting him to
organise meeting with chief ministers of all the states. During the
event 1,091 students, who secured the highest marks in SSLC exams by
studying in Kannada medium and 920 students from second PUC were
felicitated.
