JOHANNESBURG – Trade union Solidarity, AfriForum and AfriForum Youth say they will approach the Bloemfontein High Court for an interdict against the University of the Free State to stop a proposed change to its current language policy.

On Friday, the university’s council reached a unanimous decision to
make English the primary medium of instruction starting next year.

Solidarity however claims the new policy is already taking form and
serves to disadvantage students who want to continue their studies in
Afrikaans.

“At this stage already students that have enrolled in Afrikaans are
being forced to take their classes in English and that, in itself, is
already discriminatory in nature because there is a contract in place
between that student and the university that they will be able to do
those classes in Afrikaans.”

http://ewn.co.za/2016/03/15/Solidarity--Afriforum-to-oppose-new-UFS-language-policy

--

**************************************
N.b.: Listing on the lgpolicy-list is merely intended as a service to its members
and implies neither approval, confirmation nor agreement by the owner or sponsor of the list as to the veracity of a message's contents.
