                                <span itemprop="articleBody">JOHANNESBURG – Strict security measures are in place at the <a href="http://ewn.co.za/Topic/North-West-University" target="_blank">North West University (NWU)</a>’s Mahikeng campus <a href="http://ewn.co.za/2016/03/28/NWU-Mafikeng-classes-set-to-resume-on-Tuesday" target="_blank">where classes are expected to resume</a> this morning after the institution was <a href="http://ewn.co.za/2016/03/26/NWU-vows-to-shut-down-Mahikeng-campus-if-disruptions-continue" target="_blank">closed for five weeks</a>.<br>
<br>
University management suspended the academic programme last month after <a href="http://ewn.co.za/2016/02/29/NWU-WSU-remain-closed-UFS-resumes-classes" target="_blank">angry students set alight the science building</a> and <a href="http://ewn.co.za/2016/02/27/Theres-a-concerning-trend-emerging-in-student-protests" target="_blank">vandalised property</a>.<br>
<br>
They were unhappy with the inauguration of a new Student Representative Council. <br>
<br>
The university's Koos Degenaar says private security guards will be deployed on campus this morning.<br>
<br>
“We will have strong security on campus. We make use of a student card 
and that card will have to be activated for any student to have access 
to the university or to come to campus.”<br>
<br>
He says students have indicated that they are eager to resume the academic programme.<br>
<br>
“I think the mood is positive and students have expressed a desire to continue with their studies and save the first semester.”<br>
<br>
Students moved in to residences under the strict supervision of security guards yesterday.<br>
<br>
The university says talks with the SRC will continue, to make sure there are no more issues that could spark violence.<br>
