Language politics and policies in colonial and post-colonial states necessitates an interrogation of the universality of the Western European model and recognition of the ubiquity of societal and individual multilingualism. Global English, the language of globalization particularly in its neo-liberal form, adds a further complication to the conventional study of language politics and policy. The Himalayan Studies Conference V provides a geographical, historical and cultural thematic for invigorating the study of language politics and policy.
