<html><head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html charset=utf-8"></head><body style="word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; -webkit-line-break: after-white-space;" class=""><div dir="auto" style="word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; -webkit-line-break: after-white-space;" class=""><div class=""><b class=""><br class=""></b></div><div class=""><b class="">Research funding: Language and Health (HCALM 2017-18 Call for Proposals)</b></div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class=""><br class=""></div>For almost a decade Health Canada has been funding important and innovative research on linguistic issues in healthcare provision, through HCALM (Health Care Access for Linguistic Minorities) Network – an interdisciplinary and interinstitutional community of researchers. The project comprises the research capacity of the larger Training and Retention of Health Professionals Project (TRHP), based at the Institute for Health and Social Policy at McGill University.<br class=""><br class="">The HCALM Network issues regularly a call for proposals for research projects whose focus is to investigate the relationship between language and access to health care or social services. Research themes include but are not limited to the following: <br class=""><div class=""><ul class=""><li class="">Economics of language in health care</li><li class="">Cultural and linguistic competency</li><li class="">Health or social inequalities</li><li class="">Health geography and spatial statistics</li><li class="">Retention of health professionals in remote or rural communities</li><li class="">Second language instruction</li><li class="">L2 capacity creation and development among health professionals</li></ul></div><div class=""><br class=""></div>Proposals must focus on access to health care for English-speaking minorities in Quebec. <b class="">Researchers can propose a study on any of the aforementioned research themes including comparative studies</b>. In addition, proposals for studies aiming to measure the cost of language barriers in Quebec's health and social services system are encouraged.<br class=""><br class="">For the 2017-18 funding competition, <b class="">a maximum of $10,000 is allocated per research project for a period of one year</b>, with the intention of providing seed money for new research that expands the body of knowledge on language and health. No carry overs are permitted from one fiscal year to another.<br class=""><br class="">Selection of research proposals takes place in April. Funded applicants become members of the HCALM Network and will be referenced as such in all formal communications. An approval package will be sent to selected candidates and will define roles and responsibilities, payment schedule and a reporting template based on Health Canada requirements. Affiliation with the institution must be established prior to submitting a proposal.
