The Asam Sahitya Sabha and eight literary bodies of different
communities on Tuesday have "mutually accepted" certain points over a
common language policy for the state.</p> <p>The Sabha and the literary
bodies had a daylong meeting with the state education department at
Kahilipara, which was presided over by commissioner and secretary of the
elementary education department, Pritam Saikia.</p> <p>"Considering the
greater interest of the state the participants have mutually accepted
certain points. The education department will prepare the policy, which

which has numerous languages, does not have a language policy for
education. At present, the medium of instruction and the languages
taught in elementary schools are guided by a curriculum framework of the
State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT).</p> <p>"The new policy will talk about the languages a student will learn during his/her elementary stage," the source said.</p> <p>"One
positive aspect of the meeting was that it has removed the differences
between the Sabha and the eight literary bodies. Things are going in the
right direction. The meeting decided to give space to all recognised
languages and do away with the idea of making a particular language
