 Parameshwara took to Twitter to send out a stern warning to bank 
officials assaulting customers who insist on conducting transactions in <a class="gmail-key_underline" href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Kannada">Kannada</a>.

<br>Prompted by recent incidents including one in Bangarpet in Kolar 
district where a bank official attacked a customer for speaking in 
Kannada, Parameshwara urged bank authorities to take action against the 
official.

 deputy chief minister does have a point. Having a bank account is no 
longer the prerogative of the moneyed, but a basic need. It is absurd to
 expect people, especially those in rural areas, to conduct transactions
 in languages alien to them. Not everyone has access to education in an 
English-medium school, while Hindi is only one of the 22 official 
languages. By turning away customers just because they wish to 
communicate in their native language in their own backyard, banks are 
not only insulting them, but also denying them a basic right to service.</p><small></small></div></div>

<br>“It has come to our notice that customers are being attacked for 
wanting to transact in Kannada,” Parameshwara tweeted in Kannada on 
Monday. “Banks must warn their staff against such incidents and take 
action against officials who take law into their own hands.”

<br>Citing Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, Parameshwara said 
banks are expected to adopt a threelanguage policy. He said printed 
material including challans must be in English, Hindi and the local 
language of the state.

again reminded bank officials at high-level meetings that they must 
follow the three-language policy in accordance with RBI guidelines,” he 
said in another tweet. “But it has not been implemented. The non-Kannada
 speaking bank officials should at least put in an effort to learn 
Kannada.”

praise on the microblogging platform, especially since it comes at a 
time when pro-Kannada organisations and the Kannada Development 
Authority are fighting to ensure Indian Banking Personnel Selection 
(IBPS) exams can also be taken in Kannada.

demanding an amendment to the IBPS rules, which has done away with an 
eligibility clause that mandates a job applicant must have studied 
Kannada as a language till preuniversity, be reversed.

relaxing banking recruitment rules,” one Twitter user said in response 
to Parameshwara’s tweets. “Earlier, it was compulsory that bank staff 
learn Kannada within six months after their appointment, but now it has 
been relaxed. You should prevail upon the Centre to bring it back.” S G
