<div dir="ltr">I am sending this Retirement Blessing Message for you, Nancy, on behalf of my husband, Hal (aka Dr. Harold) Schiffman who was promoted to Heaven in December 2022. I know Hal would want to be included in your celebration. During his active years at UPenn with the Penn Language Center and other parts of the University he loved working with you, Nancy. You were a true partner in his passion for the promotion of bilingual education and the support of language minorities. He was always excited to talk about his meetings with you and plans for his teaching in your programs. Thank you for embracing his shared vision even though he was not officially part of the Graduate School of Education. I know you will be continuing to guide the love of learning and language in whatever ways you can. I know that Hal is presenting a toast to you from Heaven in the several hundred languages you both love the most... Fondly, Marilyn Schiffman</div><br><div class="gmail_quote"><div dir="ltr" class="gmail_attr">On Sun, Mar 17, 2024 at 8:28 AM jamie l. schissel via Lgpolicy <<a href="mailto:lgpolicy@lists.mail.umbc.edu">lgpolicy@lists.mail.umbc.edu</a>> wrote:<br></div><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0px 0px 0px 0.8ex;border-left:1px solid rgb(204,204,204);padding-left:1ex"><div><div dir="auto" style="font-family:-apple-system,"helvetica neue";font-style:normal;font-weight:400;letter-spacing:normal;text-indent:0px;text-transform:none;white-space:normal;word-spacing:1px;text-decoration:none;font-size:1rem;background-color:rgba(0,0,0,0);border-color:rgb(49,49,49);color:rgb(49,49,49)">We are delighted to celebrate the retirement of Dr. Nancy H. Hornberger. Nancy is Professor Emeritus at the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. She has been a long-time member of AAAL and is internationally known for her work in bilingualism and biliteracy, ethnography and language policy, and Indigenous language revitalization. In this public event, we invite people to come together to honor her tremendous legacy and we will showcase the impact of her scholarship through presentations by scholars that are featured in recent special issues on Indigenous language revitalization and the Continua of Biliteracy. Following the presentations, our celebration will showcase the sharing of photos and messages from the larger community about their relationships with Nancy. Nancy will have the opportunity to address everyone, and then we will transition into a social gathering, where we invite attendees to share their well wishes. </div><div dir="auto" style="font-family:-apple-system,"helvetica neue";font-size:16px;font-style:normal;font-weight:400;letter-spacing:normal;text-indent:0px;text-transform:none;white-space:normal;word-spacing:1px;text-decoration:none;background-color:rgba(0,0,0,0);border-color:rgb(49,49,49);color:rgb(49,49,49)"><div style="font-family:-apple-system,"helvetica neue";background-color:rgba(0,0,0,0);border-color:rgb(49,49,49);color:rgb(49,49,49)"><img style="max-width: 100%; font-family: -apple-system, "helvetica neue"; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); border-color: rgb(49, 49, 49); color: rgb(49, 49, 49);"></div><div style="font-family:-apple-system,"helvetica neue";background-color:rgba(0,0,0,0);border-color:rgb(49,49,49);color:rgb(49,49,49)" dir="auto"><div style="font-family:-apple-system,"helvetica neue""><img src="cid:18e495ee0cced7548511" style="max-width: 100%; font-family: -apple-system, "helvetica neue";"></div> </div></div><div dir="auto" style="font-family:-apple-system,"helvetica neue";font-style:normal;font-weight:400;letter-spacing:normal;text-indent:0px;text-transform:none;white-space:normal;word-spacing:1px;text-decoration:none;font-size:1rem;background-color:rgba(0,0,0,0);border-color:rgb(49,49,49);color:rgb(49,49,49)">Thank you and take care, </div><div dir="auto" style="font-family:-apple-system,"helvetica neue";font-style:normal;font-weight:400;letter-spacing:normal;text-indent:0px;text-transform:none;white-space:normal;word-spacing:1px;text-decoration:none;font-size:1rem;background-color:rgba(0,0,0,0);border-color:rgb(49,49,49);color:rgb(49,49,49)">Frances Kvietok and Jamie Schissel</div></div>
